Elmira High School junior Ricardo Cervantez will be representing Veneta at the USA National Boxing Tournament in Lafayette, Louisiana, starting next week.

He is fundraising to help pay for travel expenses, including plane tickets, a hotel room and a rental car, for him and his dad/coach, Enrico Cervantez.

The EHS student has traveled to nationals three other times, advancing to the semifinals one time.

He will be fighting at a new weight of 147 pounds. At other national tournaments, he fought at 139 pounds.

The father-son duo have been preparing for the past month, training and fighting.

“I train in the gym six or seven days a week,” Ricardo Cervantez said. “I try my best to run every morning. I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in for this tournament. I will do my best to not let the people who believe in me down.”
