EHS Students Dance in North Eugene Competition

North Eugene High School held a dance competition May 20 and 21. Saturday saw the performances of dancers ten years of age and younger. Sunday held the competitions for those eleven and older. 

Elmira juniors Madison Buckley and Gwen Scadlock, along with ninth-graders Alyssa Woolcott and Jocelyn St. Germain danced for the West Valley Dance Studio in the weekend competition.

The dances were choreographed by Brittney Deptuch, the owner and director of West Valley Dance studio. The studio received two judge awards for the performances.

Junior Gwen Scadlock

Question: How did you feel going into the competition? 

Answer: “I felt very nervous and my stomach was full of butterflies.”

Q: How long have you been dancing there?

A: “Since June or July of 2019.”

Q: How long have you been dancing for?

A: “I have been dancing since I was four years old.”

Q: What kind of dance do you perform? 

A: “I did a ballet solo, a musical theater duet, a lyrical trio, and a contemporary group dance.”

Q: What type of awards did you win?

A: “I got mediocre awards.”

Q: How many pieces did you perform?

A: “I danced in four dances.”

Q: Was it scary?

A: “Yes.”

Q: How many competitions have you done?

A: “This was my first competition ever.”

Q: Did you enjoy your experience?

A: “Yes, I’m very glad I did this. I feel like this is a good experience for me.”

Q: Did you do the dance down? If so, how did it go?

A: “Yes and I lost during the first round.”

Q: How did you feel going into the competition? 

A: “I felt pretty good and pretty confident.”

Q: What kind of dance do you perform? 

A: “I performed a jazz solo, musical theater duet, lyrical and contemporary group dance.”

Q: How long have you been dancing there?

A: “Six years, well, since it opened.”

Q: What type of awards did you win?

A: “Encore and bravo. We also got a judges award.”

Q: How many pieces did you perform?

A: “A solo, a duet and a group dance.”

Q: Was it scary? 

A: “The group dance was, yes. We wore white creepy masks and the group dance was called ‘In the Shadows.'”

Q: How many competitions have you done?

A: “We just had our first competition this year.”

Q: Did you enjoy your experience?

A: “Yes it was so much fun. I love dancing with everyone and my friends. It was a great experience.”

Q: Did you do the dance off? If so, how did it go?

A: “I did, it was a lot of fun, I made it to the first round.”
