Falcons’ Alyssa Johnson Qualifies for State Cross-Country Meet

The Elmira High School cross-country team competed in the district meet at Lane Community College on Thursday in a bid to qualify for the state meet. Junior Alyssa Johnson placed third overall and will represent the Falcons at state on Saturday.

It was the last meet of the season for those who didn’t qualify for state and the last one ran with seniors Shark Zhao and Cosette Fowler.

The girls race started at noon and was spectacular. The boys ran strong races and held tough throughout the race. All of the girls competed in the varsity race.

Fowler clocked in at 24:43, and Olivia Fatooh finished at 26:46. Johnson placed third overall with a state-qualifying time of 20:23. She said she is excited to go to state.

Zhao and Jude Carman competed in the varsity race. Zhao finished at 20:15, placing 27th, and Carman placed 21st with a time of 19:22.

Garrett Flores and Jacob King-Todd ran in the JV race. Flores placed 12th with a time of 21:45. King-Todd finished with a time of 25:26 and came in 22nd.

Coach Eric Carman said he is proud of how the team performed this season and how much they’ve improved.

The girls race of the state meet will begin at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Lane Community College. Good luck, Alyssa!
