For Thursday night’s home match against Junction City, the Elmira High School varsity volleyball team switched out their normal jerseys and sported pink uniforms as a tribute to those fighting breast cancer.

The team spent time during the week’s practices decorating their uniforms to get ready for the evening’s “pink out.”

“For a really long time, it’s been a tradition that when we play JC for the second time at home, we dress in pink, because the second home game against JC is always in October. It’s important to us to show our support to those fighting breast cancer,” varsity captain Kassidy Roe said.

The “pinked out” varsity team lost a three-set battle against the Tiger, with scores of 17-25, 19-25 and 6-25.

Senior outsider hitter Jessica Janeczko led the team in kills with eight. Janeczko and freshman outside hitter Jayden Breaux led the team in blocks with one each. Sophomore setter Lillian Ossowski led the team in assists with 13. Freshman defensive specialist Josey Robbins led the team in digs with eight. Breaux led the team in aces with two.

The JV team also suffered a loss to Junction City, with scores of 9-25, 17-25 and 14-25.

“The first set was rough, but we pulled through and picked things up for the last two sets. We improved on communicating, and our control got better. I’m really proud, even though we didn’t win,” JV captain Kelsey Hemple said.

Support the volleyball teams at the next home game — and senior night — against the Cottage Grove Lions on Tuesday. The JV match will start at 5 p.m. followed by varsity at 6:45 p.m.
