In honor of breast cancer awareness, Elmira High School’s volleyball team dressed in pink for their annual pink-out game Thursday against La Pine.

The varsity Falcons showed up in brand-new pink jerseys, thanks to head coach Tessa Slager.

The varsity, junior varsity and JV2 teams all put up a tough fight against the Hawks, but only the JV team came away with a win. Their last game, which was cut short, had the Falcons in the lead over the Hawks.

The ending scores for the JV game were 19-25 for set one, 25-14 for set two and 25-16 for set three, with the second and third sets going to the Falcons.

The JV2 team’s ending scores were 26-28 for set one and 21-25 for set two. Both sets went to the Hawks despite a tough fight from the Falcons.

Varsity’s ending scores were 20-25 for set one, 13-25 for set two and 24-26 for set three, with the Hawks taking all three sets.

Despite losing, the varsity team still racked up high numbers stat wise with an astounding 22 digs picked up by senior libero Ashlyn Turnbo (#3). Sophomores Jayden Breaux, an outside hitter (#14), and Josey Robbins, a setter (#15), both tied in aces with four. Breaux also led in kills with eight. Junior and varsity setter Lillian Ossowski (#1) led in assists with 11.

When asked about varsity’s performance, Slager said: “Super proud of them. They battled and played up to their capability. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win, but I feel like the girls really showed their character and determination to get to their level of playing.”

The Falcons competed Saturday in a tournament in Seaside. Their next match is at home against Jefferson starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
