Friday was “Anything But a Backpack Day” at Elmira High School.

Students could bring in anything but a backpack to hold their belongings from class to class for the spirit day. Containers such as laundry baskets, toy carts, suitcases, cardboard boxes and even a wheelbarrow were seen around campus.

The idea came from a viral TikTok trend that has been gaining popularity in schools as a spirit day. The trend started after a shooting in an Idaho school district. In response, the affected school temporarily banned backpacks. It led to many creative responses from students, which started the TikTok trend.
