Show Your School Spirit During ‘Decades’-Themed Homecoming Week

Elmira High School students and staff are invited to show their school spirit during Homecoming Week, which starts Monday and will end Friday with a home football game. The overall theme is “Decades,” and each class will be competing for the ultimate bragging rights.

The leadership class has planned a full slate of activities, although a couple of the more traditional festivities have been canceled for this year.

“Due to the high number of COVID-19 cases, we are sad to announce we will not be able to offer our students a homecoming dance or the homecoming parade,” Principal Rick Gardner announced to the student body.

The class competition begins with dress-up days, with each day featuring a different theme:

Monday:
Tourist Day
Tuesday:
Western Day
Wednesday:
Class Colors (12th grade: black, 11th grade: white, 10th grade: red, 9th grade: blue)
Thursday:
Character Day
Friday:
Falcon Day (purple and gold)

Leadership students will tally the number of students from each class who are dressed up each day.

In keeping with the overall theme, each class will represent a different decade. The ninth-graders will take on the 1960s, the sophomores will showcase the 1970s, the juniors will go back to the 1980s, and the seniors will feature the 1990s. Students from each class will be decorating the hallways to match those themes. Decorating is planned for Monday after school, from 3:20 p.m. to 5 p.m. Talk to your class officers if you would like to help.

Other activities include a fundraiser. During the morning and during lunch, there will be jugs for each class. Students are invited to put coins into the class jugs to add to their class points, but students also can subtract points from another class by putting dollar bills in the jugs for other classes. Dollar bills only count against points and will not add to a class’ own points, so use them to your advantage to subtract points away from other classes! The breakdown is as follows:

Penny: 1 point
Nickel: 5 points
Dime: 10 points
Quarter: 25 points
$1 dollar bill: -100 points
$10 dollar bill: -10,000 points

The winning class will be announced during halftime of the football game on Friday, and a class picture will be taken. The Homecoming Royalty also will be honored at the game, and don’t miss the lighting of the Elmira E! Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Falcons will face the Cottage Grove Lions.
