Friday was a great night for Elmira High School basketball, facing off against Pleasant Hill in an early match-up of the season.

The boys varsity team won 51-47, junior varsity lost 50-59 and JV2 won 43-27. The girls varsity team played a tough game and were in it to the end, but lost 14-23 to the Billies. The JV girls also won, 38-28.

In the girls varsity game, ninth-grader Layla Smith did a great job driving the ball, and senior Quinn Metzger played tall, blocking Pleasant Hill from the hoop.

In the boys varsity game, junior Davis Kyser led in points, scoring 16. Junior Anton Zaporozhets was a leader throughout the game, scoring 11 points and had lots of charges, and junior Jacob Janeczko led in rebounds with eight.

“I thought they played well,” varsity assistant coach Paul Ossowski. “I think that we needed to slow it down a little. They were into it and had great energy towards the end, leading to a win.”

The boys and girls teams travel to Sisters on Tuesday.
