Veterans Day a Time to Salute Those Who Have Served

Veterans Day is next Saturday, Nov. 11, a day to honor active and former members of the military, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Several local events are planned, and there will be no school for Elmira High School students on Friday in observance of the holiday.

Among the local events is the Veterans Ruck in Eugene on Saturday. It’s promoted as “a fun way to get together and to celebrate the fellowship that is being a veteran.” Participants plan to meet at the Veterans War Memorial at Skinner Butte Park, 248 Cheshire Ave. in Eugene, “for a few words” at 2:45 p.m. and then will head to the top of the butte at 3 p.m.

In Springfield, American Legion Post #40 and the City of Springfield will celebrate veterans starting at 11 a.m. Saturday with a virtual event. Council president Joe Pishioneri will speak, and musician Tom Schwetz will lead a performance of the national anthem. Click here for the livestream.

Florence is hosting its annual Veterans Day Parade from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. This year’s grand marshal is Russ Connelly, a retired Air Force veteran.
