Don’t Be ‘Vein’! Donate to EHS Annual Blood Drive

The Annual Blood Drive returns to Elmira High School this Friday. Students and members of the community age 16 or older are encouraged to donate to help the community.

According to NPR, “The Red Cross has, for the first time, declared a national blood donation crisis. Some hospitals say they’re rationing blood products. And blood banks are scrambling to encourage donations.”

This is why EHS is encouraging students to sign up and donate. Your donation will change or save a life.

There is a personal goal for EHS to reach. If Elmira is able to reach a total of 30 or more donations, a $250 scholarship will be awarded to a student in National Honor Society. If EHS reaches the goal of 75 donations, two scholarships will be awarded.

The National Honor Society students have announced that the annual Red Cross blood drive is planned for Friday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.

You are required to sign up in advance to donate blood, so you can be pre-approved. To schedule an appointment, contact Mrs. Hunt at khunt@fernridge.k12.or.us, visit https://www.redcrossblood.org/ (sponsor code: ElmiraHS), or call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767. It is preferred that you see Mrs. Hunt or a National Honor Society student, but other methods are accepted.

To be clear, there are eligibility outlines such as weight and age in order to donate. Please do not sign up for a needed slot without checking your eligibility. Doing so can take from actual candidates’ ability to donate and it will disrupt the process.

EHS is highly encouraging students and other people over the age of 16 to donate blood. Participating in this event will help many people get the treatment that they need. This event/donation is open to the entire community, as long as they meet the requirements. Students must be over the age of 16 with parental permission in order to donate. Students ages 17 and older are able to donate without parental permission.

Students get cookies, juice and snacks. There used to be little prizes in the past, but there will be no prizes this year.

“It’s my hope that we can get this started again,” Hunt said. “We used to do more. It’s my hope to grow it as a community again.”
