Conservation Key to Protecting Water Supply

Water pollution is one of the world’s biggest environmental challenges. In fact, 3% of the world’s water is fresh water, and more than half of that is locked away in glaciers or ice caps, or is polluted.

Millions of gallons of water are wasted every day. Oil is being dumped into the ocean. Trash is being illegally and irresponsibly disposed of into the ocean. In the future, water sources will be a major problem. Desalination is an option through which we remove the salt from saltwater, converting it to fresh water. However, this process is expensive and time consuming, and the process harms other parts of the environment.

Though this is a larger-than-life issue, there are many ways we individually can conserve
water. The first being to turn off the faucet while not in that moment using the water, when brushing your teeth, scrubbing the soap on your hands, doing the dishes, etc. Another way is to water lawns and gardens only during the cool parts of the day so that maximum water is being absorbed instead of evaporating.

Other ways to conserve water include:

• Running only full loads of dishes and laundry

• Producing less trash, and with the trash you do produce make sure you are putting into the trash and not on the ground outside

• Use rainwater for things you can

• Fix and check for leaks in piping in your home
