(Photo by Alex Glenzer \/ Falcon News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>October is National Principals Month, &#8220;an opportunity to celebrate and honor our incredible school principals for their visionary leadership and tireless pursuit for success for each student,\u201d according to principalsmonth.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falcon News sat down with Elmira High School Principal Rick Gardner and asked him to reflect on his career as a principal, what he enjoys about Elmira, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Question: How long have you worked in education?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer: \u201cThis is my 27th year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: How long have you worked for Elmira?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: &#8220;This is his fifth year working for Elmira,&#8221; adding that he has been a principal for a total of six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What is your favorite part of being a principal? What is your least favorite part?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: \u201cMy favorite part, I think, is my day-to-day interactions with the kids. My least favorite part is the long hours (some days being 12 hours).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: Do you enjoy being a principal of high-schoolers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: \u201cYeah, I do, particularly graduation and getting to see the kids at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What do you find special about this school?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: \u201cWe have a great staff \u2026 and I think we have good kids!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Students and Staff Have to Say About Our Principal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falcon News asked students and staff to share what they appreciate about Mr. Gardner. Below are some of their responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mr. Wondra:<\/strong> \u201cHe is always open for discussing new ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mrs. Wartenbee:<\/strong> \u201cHe is always understanding and patient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ninth-grader Madelyn Martin: <\/strong>\u201cI appreciate that he is nice to all the students and cares about the school and has a cute dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ninth-grader Mason Lane:<\/strong> \u201cI appreciate that he takes his time to look after every person and is very kind to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ninth-grader Easy Armstrong: <\/strong>\u201cI appreciate that he makes a lot of events happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ninth-grader Abigail Neely:<\/strong> \u201cHe seems nice, and that he cares about the school and students, as well as staff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior River Vandever:<\/strong> \u201cHe holds the door open every day, and asks me how I\u2019m doing when I pass by.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Katie Geiger:<\/strong> \u201cOne thing about our principal that I appreciate is that he always enforces the rules no matter the circumstance, to keep our school safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Josh Sweet:<\/strong> \u201cI appreciate his good attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Ethan Bennett:<\/strong> \u201cMr. Gardner is always sure to have the job done on whatever it is. Being in his position is a tough job, but he is sure to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Iris Frome:<\/strong> \u201cI like how Mr. Gardner seems to know everyone. He always says hi to kids in the hallways and that shows that he cares.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Kelsey Hemple:<\/strong> \u201cHe\u2019s a very capable and dedicated principal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Lillian Ossowski:<\/strong> \u201cI appreciate how Mr. Gardner is involved with the students. He walks around the school and holds open the door for students saying hello and good morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior Mari Espinoza: <\/strong>\u201cMr. Gardner is a great principal. He cares for his students and is an amazing person to talk to. He has great dad jokes, and is always there to say hello.
