It’s taco time! America celebrates National Taco Day on Oct. 4 every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The holiday started in 2009, but the origin of tacos goes back much further. Tacos likely originated in Mexico a long time before Europeans arrived. Traditionally, they were made with corn tortillas and fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern version of tacos that we all know and love began to take shape in the early 1900s as Mexican immigrants began to work on American railroads and silver mines. During their initial introduction, they were called \u201ctaco de minero,\u201d which means \u201cminer\u2019s tacos.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 1920s, tacos were adapted to suit American tastes. The American taco became less spicy and more likely to include beef or cheddar cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tacos are a favorite of 95% of Americans and, as a whole, they eat more than 4 billion tacos every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
