This past Thursday and Friday, the Elmira track and field team competed at Sutherlin High School in the 3A Special District 1 Championships.

Of the athletes who competed, seven of them advanced to the state competition at Hayward Field this Thursday and Friday, the most notable of which was ninth-grader Levi Ruby who became district champion in the 300m hurdles.

At the district championships, the boys placed second out of nine teams, and the girls placed eighth of nine teams.

This year’s statebound athletes and their events are:

Senior Rylee Rice in the high jump

Senior Marvin Hambrick in the 110m hurdles

Senior Ava Greene in the 100m

Junior Memphis Morgan in the pole vault

Junior Petra Archer in the 110m hurdles

Sophomore Trayvn DuMont in the 400m

Ninth-grader Levi Ruby in the 300m hurdles

Rice said she was disappointed with her performance at districts but is fired up for state.

“I definitely could have done better and been district champion again if I wasn’t sick and out of practice,” Rice said. “I’m really focused on state now and having my best possible performance.”

Ruby shared his thoughts on being the only district champion for the Falcons, especially at such a young age.

“It’s really cool that I became district champ as a ninth-grader, especially with how close the race was and how much I had to PR by to win in the first place,” Ruby said.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex
