The Elmira High School track and field team are set to compete in the 49th annual Elmira Relays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Elmira Falcons will compete against Central Linn, Falls City, Mohawk, Pleasant Hill, Junction City, Philomath and Yoncalla this Friday, beginning at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scores and times will be added together from the top 2 or 3 finishers in order to decide what team won the whole competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will be the last event to be hosted on the track before it gets a brand new upgrade. Construction is expected to begin at the end of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Head Coach Patrick Wondra has a bittersweet feeling about the upcoming changes to the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI feel a bit sentimental,” Wondra told Falcon News. “One thing I have in common with all of our athletes is that I competed at this track way back in the day.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wondra believes it’s on the team to make the new track special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhile a new facility will be great, it will be up to us to build new connections to our traditions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senior thrower Zane Clemmer is looking forward to the last event being held before the new\u00a0improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is really cool being a senior going into the last meet being held on the old track, much like how we did the game on the football field,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Junior jumper Rylee Rice agrees with Clemmer, but has mixed feelings on the inconvenience of the construction timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m very excited for a new beginning, and specifically a new high jump apron!” the junior said. “I\u2019m disappointed about how we have to go about practicing, but we\u2019\u2019ll make due.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senior Jesus Cornonado-Valle is excited for the new track, but sad about not being able to use it before he graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m glad that we can have one last meet on the track so it can have a send off,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team also added new coaches this year that include throwers coach Lillianna Morales and sprinters coach Brandon Gailey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
