{"id":17116,"date":"2025-03-05T11:02:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T19:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/?p=17116"},"modified":"2025-03-13T16:18:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T23:18:08","slug":"ehs-launches-new-hall-pass-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/ehs-launches-new-hall-pass-system\/","title":{"rendered":"EHS Launches New Hall Pass System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17254\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-1024x731.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-300x214.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-768x548.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-1536x1097.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-2048x1463.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/www.ehsfalconnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/unnamed-6-570x407.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Student Success and CTE coordinator Jon Guldager says that although SmartPass &#8220;may seem like another way to get students in trouble, it was created for student learning rather than a punishment.&#8221; (Photo by Spencer Stone \/ Falcon News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Falcon News reporters Spencer Stone, Araya Price and Isa Turtura contributed to this report<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Elmira High School has officially launched its newest hall pass system called SmartPass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SmartPass is a digital hall pass system to better track where students are going or where they are, and to see how many students are leaving class throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SmartPass kicked off with the start of the second semester, and within the first week, school administrators have been collecting data and finding a pattern for safer and smarter trips throughout the halls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the highest number of student hall passes sent out in one day was approximately 285 passes, while the lowest was 140 passes so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough this system may seem like another way to get students in trouble, it was created for student learning rather than a punishment,\u201d Student Success and CTE coordinator Jon Guldager told Falcon News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The district spent $1,300, per Guldager, from the EHS Student Success fund, for a one-year pilot program that will last until January, upon which it will be re-evaluated by school officials whether to be continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStaff have been getting more familiar with SmartPass,&#8221; Principal Cydney Vandercar said. &#8220;It has been getting people to come back quicker and it saves time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent teachers from having to set the hall pass throughout each class, there are plans to set up a kiosk computer in each classroom for quicker sign-outs and fewer distractions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some students see the advantages of SmartPass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSmartPass is a huge opportunity to help prevent students from skipping class,\u201d senior Nasius Evenson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other students have some mixed reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI guess I can understand why the school wants to implement the system,\u201d the junior Carter Tracy said. \u201cI\u2019m just concerned about things taking longer than the school expects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many students have shared similar opinions, most agreeing with the response from senior Hannah Humphrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a waste of the school&#8217;s money,\u201d Humphrey said, adding that the money could be used elsewhere for better reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Mele Turtura says that she understands wanting to stop frequent bathroom breaks, but she has one key concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s very inconvenient for students and teachers and there are more cons than pros,&#8221; Turtura told Falcon News, &#8220;especially for girls when they are going through menstruation and needing a bathroom break.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the understanding that some students may have distinct health issues, they may need longer in the bathroom than others, but so far SmartPass does not offer a solution in its program.
