A Shocking Year for March Madness

This year of March Madness was unexpected. Less than 25% had a perfect bracket in the first round and less than 1% had a perfect bracket by the second round, according to ESPN.

Furman University, the thirteenth seed, upset the University of Virginia, the fourth seed.

The fifteenth seed Princeton University beat out the second seed University of Arizona. Princeton then goes on to win in the second round against the number seven seed University of Missouri, but loses the following round to Creighton University.

Fairleigh Dickinson University, the sixteenth seed, beat Purdue University, the number one seed.

The Final Four had no first seeds in it. The teams that did make it were San Diego State (a five seed), University of Connecticut (a four seed), University of Miami (a five seed), and Florida Atlantic University (a nine seed).

UCONN beat San Diego in the championship game 76-59.

EHS Librarian Tessa Slager said “I honestly didn’t watch anything past the first round but there were a lot of upsets and the championship was boring.”

“Arizona, Purdue, and Virginia threw,” Senior Tryston Rogers claimed in response to the tournament’s outcome.

This year really showed not to underestimate the underdogs.
