Recipe of the Month: Fried Apple Pie

These fried apple pies are like the ones you can get at McDonald’s. They’re deliciously flaky and sweet. They are a great fall treat, and they’re really easy and affordable!

The ingredients you’ll need for the pastry dough are:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup shortening, chilled
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold water

For the apple filling you’ll need:

  • 2 apples
  • ¼ cup white sugar, or to taste
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
  • oil for frying

To start, you’ll need to mix the salt and flour together and add in the shortening into the mixture that looks like coarse crumbs. Add in 1 to 2 tablespoons of water and mix. Then the mixture is moistened. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

To make the filling, start by peeling and slicing your apples and setting them in a saucepan. Combine your sugar and cinnamon with them and make sure it is evenly distributed on the apples. Let that sit on the low setting, stirring occasionally until your apples are soft. Then, mash them with a fork until it looks like a thick applesauce. Let it cool.

By then, your dough should be complete, so after taking it out of the wrapping, use a rolling pin and flatten it on a lightly floured surface. Use a large cookie cutter to evenly cut out rounds. In each round, place about 1 tablespoon of your apple mix. Make sure to dampen the ends of your dough with cold water then fold in half. Press in the ends with a fork to seal it off.

Heat up your oil in a large pan to about 375 degrees and place the pies in. Fry them two or three times, cooking until the crust is flaky and golden brown. Drain out any oil that is leftover on the pies by setting them on paper towels and let cool.

Once you are done with that, they are ready to be enjoyed!
