Elmira’s JV and varsity volleyball teams played home matches against the Marist Spartans on Tuesday.

The JV team went home with a loss after a three-set game, with scores of 3-25, 14-25 and 14-25.

“I’m proud of them. They’ve been working on the three Cs: confidence, communication and control. As the game went on, we got better at all three of those things,” JV coach DesiRae Wright-Rendon said.

Elmira’s varsity team suffered a loss after a tough four-set battle. Set one ended 18-25, Spartans; set 2, 20-25, Spartans; set 3, 18-25, Falcons; and set 4, 22-25, Spartans.

Senior outside hitter Jessica Janeczko led in both kills and blocks with seven kills and four blocks. She was followed by ninth-grade outside hitter Jayden Breaux, who had four kills and two blocks. Junior defensive specialist Veronica Hanson led the team in aces, followed by Lillian Ossowski with two and Breaux with three. Ossowski, a sophomore setter, led the team in assists, with 13, and digs, with nine. Ninth-grade defensive specialist Josey Robins tied with Ossowski for most digs.

“It was a good match by all our players. Everyone gave 100%, all players on the floor and bench,” head coach Greg Haffner said.

Come support the Falcons volleyball team at the next home game on Thursday against the Junction City Tigers. The JV match starts at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:45 p.m. The varsity team has put together a “Pink Out” in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The players will be sporting pink jerseys instead of their usual uniforms.
